Australia’s star players, Mitchell Starc and Steve Smith are ruled out of the upcoming South Africa tour. Smith is reported to have sustained a wrist injury, while Starc is recovering from the groin soreness he sustained during the Ashes 2023. Aussies regular skipper Pat Cummins will be sidelined as well as he recovers from a wrist injury, while in his absence, Mitchell Marsh will lead the side for three T20Is and five ODIs.
However, Smith suffered a left wrist injury, and it is pertinent to mention that during the entire England series, the star batter was wearing a splint to recover from his injury. He is expected to be back in the squad for the India tour, starting on September 22, prior to the ODI World Cup 2023. Smith was set to open in the T20Is against the African side, and he was one of the few players from the Ashes 2023 squad to be part of this tour.
We expect Mitchell Starc and Steve Smith to be fully fit and available for the Indian ODI series: George Bailey (chairman of the national selection commission)
“The compacted Ashes series and the World Test Championship was a heavy load for the group, and we are taking a conservative approach to the build-up to the World Cup," said George Bailey, the chairman of the national selection commission.
"With the World Cup the priority of the squad, it was determined on advice that it was best for Steve and Mitchell to join the group in India by which time we expect them to be fully fit and available for the Indian ODI series, plus the World Cup warm-up fixture," he further added.
