KL Rahul was ruled out of the Zimbabwe tour pertaining to post-covid recovery issues. The Indian wicket-keeper was well in contention to lead the side until he backed out of the series. The 30-year-old clarified on his social media account that he would make a comeback and wear the blue jersey soon.
Times of India has now reported that the Indian opener will be back for the Asia Cup 2022. The talismanic batter backed out of the South Africa T20I series in June earlier this year. Since then, the youngster has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.
A source from the Indian Cricket Board has revealed to PTI that KL Rahul is well in contention for the future.
"KL Rahul doesn't need to prove anything. He is a class player. Whenever he plays T20, it is always as a specialist opener and that would continue. Surya and Rishabh are set to play as specialist middle-order batters going forward," the source told PTI.
This adds to the fact that the star batter will make a comeback soon. KL Rahul has amassed 1,831 runs in the T20I format so far. The Karnataka-based batter is one of the few players to have two centuries to his name in the T20I format.
The Lucknow team skipper has been toiling hard to become match fit. The Asia Cup 2022 squad will be announced on August 8. And it is quite sure now that the batter will be an integral part of the squad for both Asia Cup and the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
KL Rahul's approach will be a question given Rohit Sharma made it clear that they will play aggressively. This means that the 30-year-old batter might have to change his approach. KL Rahul usually takes time before changing the gears in T20Is. The wicket-keeper batter must change his approach now and might have to play aggressively from the ball one itself.
KL Rahul will look to make the most of the Asia Cup 2022 and gain form before the mega event in Australia.
