India pulled off a heist at Dhaka against Bangladesh, as KL Rahul's side snatch a 3-wicket victory from the jaws of defeat. The eastern neighbours ended up with 231 in the second innings and set a target of 145 runs for India in the fourth innings. India were 45-4 at the end of Day 3, and India had to get 100 runs. On a pitch that was spinning and where it was difficult to bat, Bangladesh made 145 look like 400. India were made to sweat for every run.
Mehidy Hasan picked up 5-63 in the second innings and then India were looking down in the dumps at 74-7 when Axar Patel was dismissed. Then India found heroes in Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer who put together for India the highest 8th wicket stand in the 4th innings for India. Iyer scored a valuable 29 off 46 balls with four fours. Ashwin was sensational with the bat as he scored a superb 42 off 62 balls with four fours and one six. In the end, India romped home by three wickets.
Happy that we got the job done: KL Rahul
At the post-match presentation, here is what KL Rahul had to say, You trust the guys in the middle (during such situations). We've played enough cricket to realise that someone will put their hand up to win us the game. But I'm not going to lie, there was a lot of tension in the dressing room. It was a tough wicket to bat on, they put us under pressure in both innings.
It was a new-ball surface to some extent, once the ball got softer, it was easier to score runs. It was a matter of who plays the new ball better. We did lose a few more wickets than ideal (in the chase) but we got the job done. Will take the win. That (bowling attack) has been the case for the last many years now. Wherever we've gone overseas in recent years, we have done the job.
India won their 16th Test series in a row in Asia after defeating Bangladesh by three wickets. In the first innings, Bangladesh were in dominating position at 213-5 but collapsed to 227. Then India somehow got to 314 in their first innings. Bangladesh batted out of their skins to make 231 in the second innings to get a 145-run lead.
