Dunith Wellalage, a name that has always resonated in cricketing circles in Sri Lanka, has once again proven his mettle on the field. On Tuesday, during the Asia Cup Super 4 match against India in Colombo, he showcased his exceptional skills by taking a remarkable five-wicket haul.

When Team India took the field against Sri Lanka in their second Super Four game of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, the supporters had high expectations for them. After crushing Pakistan by 228 runs the previous evening, Rohit Sharma and his team needed a victory to go to the championship game. India had to fight tooth and nail to secure a spot in the continental tournament's championship match, despite ending Sri Lanka's unbeaten run with a 41-run victory.

Wellalage, who was introduced to the attack in the eleventh over, dismissed Gill for 19 on the first ball of his game-altering stint. In the fourteenth over, Kohli, who had just played a record-breaking innings against Pakistan, fell to Wellalage. Wellalage dismissed Kohli for 3 runs off 12 balls by taking a straightforward catch at midwicket from Sri Lanka's captain Dasun Shanaka.

The 20-year-old claimed the match-winning wicket in the Super 4 game between India and Sri Lanka following the drinks interval. In the 16th over, Wellalage outwitted Rohit to help the defending Asia Cup champions turn things around. After Wellalage bowled a maiden and claimed three wickets while allowing just 4 runs in 3 overs, India went from 80-0 to 93-3 in 16 overs. In the 30th over, Wellalage dismissed KL Rahul for 39 after being re-initiated by captain Shanaka.

Despite in losing cause Wellalage reamaid as Player of the match

Wellalage made an unbeaten 42 off 46 balls but ran out of partners as Sri Lanka lost by 41 runs. With this all-round performance, 42*, 5/40 and two catches, Wellalage was the standout performer for the team.

Wellalage speaking in the post-match presentation said, “First of all I want to congratulate the Indian team. They have so many experienced players but unfortunately, we lost the game, we have another game, and we want to put up a good fight. Kuldeep is a great bowler, I tried to play my normal game with a positive mindset. Virat Kohli’s Wicket is my dream come true one, I want to thank my team-mates and my coaching staff - they gave me great support”.
