Sanju Samson has not been given an opportunity in the T20 leg of the series against New Zealand. India had a shock exit at the recently concluded 20-20 World Cup against England, where they were kept down to just 168-6 with the bat, and then were blown away with a terrific partnership of 170 by Alex Hales and Jason Roy who took England to superb 10 wicket win.
After the debacle at the World Cup, a reset was made in the T20 format for India with Hardik Pandya was given captaincy in the T20 setup. A squad with fresh faces was selected against New Zealand as the seniors such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammad Shami were rested. Samson was also a part of the squad, which had the likes of Shubman Gill, Kuldeep Yadav, Umran Malik, Washington Sundar and the like.
Samson has scored in 16 matches he has scored 296 runs at an average of 21.14 and a strike rate of 135.35. He has been given the cold shoulder despite being a consistent run-getter in the Indian T20 League, where he has made 3526 runs in 138 matches at an average of 29.14 and a strike rate of 135.71. The star batter has made three hundreds and 17 fifties.
He has also been a good captain as he led Rajasthan to their second final appearance in the Indian T20 league in the 2022 edition. Samson also has made runs in the limited opportunities that he has got for India and had recently played some match-winning knocks in the series against West Indies, which was played in the Caribbean. He scored 45 runs in the two chances that he got there.
Another plus point is that he can also take the gloves and bat in the middle order which has been Team India’s weak spot in T20 cricket. It remains a mystery why someone as free-flowing and dynamic as Samson has not been given his due despite proving himself time and again.
Twitter was miffed because of his non-selection in the New Zealand series, let us take a look at the reactions here-
