Shubman Gill's maiden India Premier League (IPL) century and Mohammed Shami's stunning performance with the ball helped Gujarat Titans (GT) become the first side to qualify for the playoffs with a 34-run win on Monday, May 16. The 23-year-old has been trapped in the 90s twice before, but this time he crossed the triple figure against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The GT opener treated the home fans to some classical shots en route to his milestone and became the first player to hit a century for the defending champions. After losing his opening partner for a duck, Gill and Sai Sudarshan stitched a brilliant 147-run partnership for the second wicket, during which the former also completed a 23-ball half-century.

Apart from the duo, none of the other batters could find any resistance at the crease, but Gill's 101 off 58 balls, including 1 six and 13 fours, helped the team reach a competitive score of 188-9 in the first innings. After his spectacular knock, Virat Kohli posted an Instagram story praising the youngster. "There's potential and there's Gill. Go on and lead the next generation. God bless you," Kohli wrote on his Instagram story.

Gill's words after the GT vs LSG game have resurfaced

Having scored a century in all formats of the game, Gill has been on a roll in 2023. The right-hander has scored three ODI centuries so far this year, including a double century against New Zealand. He has hundreds each in Tests and T20Is, both coming at the same Motera stadium where he scored his maiden IPL century.

Gill missed out on a century a few days back when he was unbeaten on 94 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Fans now remember his words after missing out on a well-deserved hundred. "It was in my mind but I missed out on the bouncer I hit for a single. No worries though, there are 5-6 games left and hopefully I'll get my hundred in one of them," said Gill in the post-match presentation of GT vs LSG match.
