Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are one of the franchises that have yet to win an Indian Premier League (IPL) title since the league's debut in 2008. RCB has been able to deliver some fantastic thrillers and keep entertaining the crowd throughout the years to remain one of the blockbuster teams in IPL history. The presence of world-class players such as Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, and Faf du Plessis garnered them a massive fan base across the country.
Meanwhile, former Australia speedster Brett Lee said that RCB is a franchise that every kid admire. "RCB is a franchise every kid looks up to. It's a wonderful franchise," said the right-arm pacer.
RCB had a terrific run in the 2016 IPL, reaching the finals on the back of heroics from Kohli, de Villiers, and Gayle. The former RCB skipper was a beast that season, scoring 973 runs and winning the Player of the Tournament. The season also witnessed a record-breaking partnership (229) from the IPL's greatest pair, ABD and Kohli. However, the Bangalore-based franchise failed to win the coveted title as they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 runs in the final.
Can RCB win their maiden title this year?
RCB has done well over the last two seasons, finishing fourth in the 2022 points standings. Faf-du Plessis-led side have had an inconsistent run in IPL 2023 so far, but they currently have every chance of making it to the playoffs. With a massive 112-run win against Rajasthan Royals (RR) last Sunday, the 'Red Brigade' raised their Net Run Rate (NRR) and no longer need to rely on other teams to enter the knockout stage.
Sitting fifth in the points table, with six wins from 12 games, RCB need to win their remaining two matches to secure a playoff berth. Their next assignment is against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday, May 18. Their final group match is against the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT), who have already qualified for the playoffs after a dominant run throughout the league. However, RCB will have the home advantage as they play at Chinnaswamy on May 21.
