Fitness is an important factor when it comes to a sport. For a cricketer, if he is fit, it will be an added advantage for him to perform well on the field. Whenever any cricketer fails to maintain their fitness and training, there are questions surrounding them even if they perform well for their respective teams. Indian captain Rohit Sharma is now a victim of such questions as legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev criticized the star batter's fitness.

Former India captain Kapil Dev, in response to a question asked about Rohit Sharma's fitness in an ABP News interview, insisted that Rohit must work a little harder to maintain his fitness level. "It is very important to be fit. More so for a captain. It’s a shame if you are not fit. Rohit needs to put some hard work on it," Kapil said.

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain also acknowledged that Rohit is a great player and a great captain. “He is a great batsman but when you talk about his fitness, he looks a bit overweight, at least on TV. Yes, it’s different when you look at someone on TV and then in real life. But from whatever I see, Rohit is a great player and a great captain, but he needs to get fit," he said.

Kapil also took the name of former Indian captain Virat Kohli while talking about fitness. As everyone knows, Kohli is a player who maintains his fitness level at a high level. The ace batter's on-field performances and training sessions will speak volumes about how good he is in terms of fitness. "Look at Virat, whenever you see him, you say, ‘that’s some fitness!", the former cricketer said.

Not the first time that Rohit has faced such criticism

However, this is not the first time Rohit is facing such comments about his fitness. He faced such criticism from former greats and fans whenever he was injured or failed to perform well. Kapil, in an interview earlier, had spoken the same about Rohit. The fast-medium bowler and hard-hitting middle-order batter said Rohit is one of the best in terms of his cricketing skills, but the same cannot be said for his fitness.

“There’s no shortcoming in Rohit Sharma. He has everything but I personally think, there is a huge question mark over his fitness. Is he fit enough? Because a captain should be someone who motivates the other players to get fitter, the teammates should feel proud of their captain,” Kapil had said.

However, despite this, India under Rohit Sharma is having a great time as they defeated Australia in the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to retain the title. The two teams will meet again for the third Test on March 1. The win in the Indore Test will secure Rohit and Co a spot in the Test Championship Final. The men in blue are also gearing up for hosting the 2023 ODI World Cup under Rohit's captaincy.
