The Delhi Capitals opener and skipper, David Warner, won the toss and chose to bat in the 2023 Indian Premier League encounter against the Gujarat Titans on Tuesday in Ahmedabad.
Mohammed Shami, the star speed bowler for Gujarat Titans, showed the opposition that choosing to bat first proved a mistake as he only allowed 11 runs and claimed four wickets during his four-over spell in the game. This was one of his greatest stints in a while, and the batters for the Delhi Capitals didn't have any kind of strategy in place to score against him.
David Miller was dismissed on the opening ball of the game when Englishman Phil Salt struck the ball directly at him. Due to a misunderstanding with Priyam Garg, the Delhi Capitals also lost their captain, leaving them with only 28 runs after the powerplay and half of their team in the pavilion.
In addition to Garg, Rilee Rossouw, and Manish Pandey also lost their wickets as a result of a missed drive and a late movement that wicketkeeper Wridhiman Saha successfully caught behind the stumps.
Aman Khan and Axar Patel formed a much-needed partnership and a one which took the Delhi Capitals side out of a precarious situation. Their partnership only lasted 50 runs before Ripal Patel joined Aman on the crease. The duo were looking to find boundaries and were successful a few times but made sure their side reached an average total of 130/8 in their 20 overs
Taking a look at the Gujarat Titans' innings against the Delhi Capitals
Gujarat Titans got off to a poor start as they lost their opener and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha in the first over itself and soon they lost star players in the form of Vijay Shankar and Shubman Gill. Hardik Pandya was still at the crease and ensured his side got some boundaries in the powerplay. David Miller was also sent packing by the Delhi bowlers in the first over of the powerplay as Gujarat saw themselves under a lot of pressure.
Hardik Pandya scored a valuable fifty in a tricky chase and was doing the job for his side by taking them close to the total. He got support from Abhinav Manohar and Rahul Tewatia as they needed 32 from the final two overs with Tewatia and Pandya at the end. With 9 runs needed from 3 balls, Tewatia lost his wicket and the momentum went to Delhi Capitals and Ishant Sharma kept his cool to get his side over the line. In the end, Delhi Capitals won the game by 5 runs to stay alive in the Indian Premier League.
