The 20-20 World Cup 2022 began on October 16, Sunday, with Sri Lanka taking on Namibia in South Geelong, Victoria. And the mega tournament kicked off in an extraordinary manner as the Asia Cup champions were beaten by 14th-ranked Namibia by 55 runs, scripting a famous 20-20 World Cup upset on the opening day of the 2022 edition.

Meanwhile, India’s campaign will kick off on October 23 with a Super 12 game against their arch-rival Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). This will be their seventh meeting in the competition, and like in the 2021 edition in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the two sides will clash early on in the Super 12 stages.

In a pre-tournament event where all the captains of the respective nations gathered, when asked how the setup in the room was, India captain Rohit Sharma said that it had the ‘feel’ of the popular TV Series ‘Game of Thrones’. “Yaa it's pretty cool actually, just a Game of Thrones kind of feel,” said Rohit in a press conference.

I already have my XI for the Pakistan match: Rohit Sharma

Rohit, speaking of the preparations for the curtain-raiser game against the neighbours, said that he does not believe in last-minute decisions. He expressed that he wants to keep the boys informed about team selection beforehand so that they can prepare early on. He also revealed that he already has a playing XI ready for the game although it is still five days away.

“I don’t believe in last-minute decisions. We want to keep our boys informed about team selection before so that they can prepare early. I already have my XI for the Pakistan match. Already, those players are informed. I don’t believe in a last-minute thing. I want them to prepare well,” said Rohit.

India and Pakistan have met six times in the 20-20 World Cup, and the Men in Blue have a superior record of 5-1. However, Babar Azam’s men have the bragging rights, winning by 10 wickets in their last meeting in the competition in 2021.
