Sri Lanka announced its squad for Asia Cup 2023, which will not feature some key players like Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera.

Sri Lanka has announced its updated squad for the 2023 Asia Cup, which will be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. With the tournament set to start on the 30th of August, Sri Lanka suffered covid scare in their dressing room. As a result, the island nation had to announce the replacement of such players. The defending champions have announced the replacements of unavailable players and updated their squad.   

Sri Lanka’s updated squad for the Asia Cup 2023 is Dasun Shanaka (C), Kusal Mendis (VC), Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya De Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Matheesh Pathirana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushan Hemantha, Binura Fernando, and Pramod Madushan. The squad does not have some of the key Sri Lankan players over the years like Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, and Lahiru Kumara.   

Lack of experience in the squad

Wanindu Hasaranga is not in the squad due to an injury. The likes of Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara have also been ruled out of the series due to injuries. The young sensation Dilshan Madushanka has also been ruled out of the series. The new squad does have good names. Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, and Dimuth Karunaratne form a good opening unit. The middle order has some good names like Dhananjaya De Silva, Charith Asalanka, Kusal Perera, and Sadeera Samarawickrama.   

In the lower middle order, Sri Lanka has the experience of Dasun Shanaka and the youthfulness of Dunith Wellalage. With the ball, Sri Lanka has some good options like Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushan Hemantha, Binura Fernando, and Pramod Madushan. There are good players, but the squad required some experienced campaigners like Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal.   

The loss of some key players like Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera can be a big blow for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka also lost Avishka Fernando, who was pretty good for Sri Lanka in ODIs. With so many losses, Sri Lanka will not be at their best in the tournament. It is to be seen whether the Sri Lankan youngsters and inexperienced players can step up for the team.
