England is all set to tour Pakistan after 17 years for a seven-match T20I series. It was earlier reported by The Guardian that the all-rounder Moeen Ali might lead the squad in the absence of Jos Buttler, who is injured. Now, it has been reported by The Telegraph that the star opener Jason Roy might be dropped for the Pakistan tour. And the report further added that he might also be dropped for the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
This news shocked the fans of the Three Lions, who believed that the opener might get the go-ahead. Roy, who was in supreme form alongside Johnny Bairstow in the 2019 50-over World Cup, has surprisingly lost his touch off late. The batter was not able to emulate such thundering energy in The Hundred 2022 and his team has been knocked out already.
The poor run at the Hundred also included three ducks that he bagged and averaged only 8.5 amassing 51 runs. The strike rate became an area of concern in the shortest format of the game, the same area where he dominated three years back. The opener managed to amass only 78 runs in six T20 internationals he played this summer for the Three Lions.
Dawid Malan and Alex Hales exceed Jason Roy
With the competition for the opening slot getting tough on the back of stupendous performances from Dawid Malan and Alex Hales, the road back to the T20I squad for Roy will be tough. The former has aggregated as many as 358 runs at an average of 59.7, while Philip Salt averages 49 after amassing 294 runs in the Hundred 2022.
Will Jacks also stands next to Malan, Salt and Hales as he played some roaring knocks in the English tournament. Ben Stokes, who will be rested for the Pakistan series, will make a cut to the 20-20 World Cup 2022 squad. Jos Buttler, the best for England at the moment, will look to get the fit before the mega event in Australia.
Jason Roy can try his luck in the ODI setup and will definitely be a part of it. But, as far as the T20I career is concerned, it might all be over for the opener who was considered 'a beast' once.
