Nathan Lyon, who is playing his 100th consecutive Test, displayed remarkable courage at Lord's, prompting the crowd to give him a standing ovation for coming out to bat despite being injured. However, ex-England cricketer Kevin Pietersen thought otherwise and that Lyon may be concussed, so Australia could bring in Todd Murphy as a substitute. Pietersen's shocking comments enraged the Aussie spinner who lashed out at him.

Lyon suffered a calf injury while running in to take a catch in the final session of Day 2 of the second Ashes Test. He had to be taken off the field and was seen walking on crutches the following day. However, the 35-year-old did not lose spirit and stepped out to bat on Day 4 to help his side in any way he can. While Lyon startled everyone, Pietersen said that Australia can get a concussion substitute in case he got hit on the head.

“I think time out of the game and also eking out every single run. Imagine if he had been hit on the head and got a concussion, he'd have got a like-for-like replacement and a world-class spinner ... it gives food for thought," Pietersen commented on Sky Sports.

Lyon was clearly displeased by Pietersen's remark

Lyon was clearly not impressed with Pietersen’s comment, and he responded to the former England captain at the end of the day's play, saying:

"I have heard comments that people thought I went out there to get hit in the head, and I'm really against that because I've lost one of my mates due to being hit in the head. So I think that's a really poor excuse or conversation being had."

He was referring to Phil Hughes, who died on the ground after being hit by a bouncer. Lyon was on the field when Hughes got hit on his head while representing South Australia against New South Wales at the SCG on November 25, 2014. The left-handed batter collapsed immediately, and never regained consciousness and later passed away in hospital.
