A superb overall performance from Bangalore led to a resounding victory over Mumbai in their first match of the 2023 Indian T20 League. Their pacers got them wickets in the powerplay, then the spinners tightened things up, and then, a stunning chase by their openers gave the franchise an 8-wicket win at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday night.

It was quite a treat for the Bangalore fans as they got to witness a blistering batting performance by Virat Kohli and captain Faf du Plessis at their home ground. Chasing 172, the duo put on a 148-run partnership - Bangalore's second century opening stand against Mumbai in the ITL - and crushed the Mumbai bowlers. Rohit Sharma and Co. looked set to begin their campaign in 2023 with a 10-wicket loss, but Arshad Khan's dismissal of du Plessis in the 15th over gave them some breathing room.

However, the first-wicket partnership had already done the damage for the visitors and it was just a formality for the former Bangalore captain to finish things off. Bangalore lost a couple of wickets, but Kohli, unbeaten on 82 off 49 balls, smashed the ball over long-on to lead the team to victory with almost four overs to spare.

The entire stadium was filled with Red Army and the loyal fans of the Bangalore franchise deserved such a terrific performance from their man. The elated fans could not keep their cool last night as they celebrated Bangalore's victory even inside the metro. A video of Bangalore fans chanting their team's name in a crowded metro is now going viral.

Some similar problems continue for Mumbai

Mumbai losing their first match of an Indian T20 League season is nothing new as yesterday's defeat against Bangalore was their 11th in a row. The five-time champions continue to face some of the same problems from the last two seasons. Their top-order batters - Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav - failed miserably to find some runs on the board. Debutant Cameron Green didn't have a great start in the big league, the same was the case with England's star pacer Jofra Archer, who returned after missing last season due to injury.

Their bowling department looked clueless against Bangalore's destructive batting order. Young Tilak Verma's brilliant batting under pressure was the only positive for Rohit's side. The 20-year-old played a blinder of an innings to lead Mumbai to a very competitive score.
