In the 16th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Delhi Capitals (DC) faced off with Mumbai Indians (MI). MI win by six wickets and open their winning account for the season. DC, on the other hand, are yet to win their first game after four matches.

It was Mi skipper Rohit Sharma who won the toss and elected to field first. Historically in IPL, teams chasing have won more times on this ground, hence the decision by Rohit. DC opened with their skipper David Warner and Prithvi Shaw, starting with aplomb, scoring 51 runs in the six-over powerplay. However, Shaw departed in the fourth over for only 15 runs off 10 balls.

The DC middle-order struggled to get going with only Manish Pandey, with 26, making a substantial contribution. Warner, on the other end, kept ticking the scoreboard, and eventually departed for a well-made 51 runs off 47 balls. In the end, it was Axar Patel, at number seven, who starred with the bat with an explosive innings of 54 runs off 25 balls.

DC were bowled out for 172 in 19.4 overs with Axar finishing as the top scorer. For MI, the pick of the bowler was the veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who picked up three wickets for 22 runs in four overs. Australian left-arm fast bowler Jason Behrendorff also completed the attack with a spell of three wickets for 23 runs in four overs.

Another last-ball thriller seals the deal

In the second innings, MI openers Rohit and Ishan Kishan came out all guns blazing as the duo added 68 runs in the first six overs. Kishan was the first to depart in the eighth over, scoring 31 runs off 26 balls. 20-year-old Tilak Varma arrived at number three and played a confident innings of 41 runs off 29 balls, before being dismissed in the 16th over.

Rohit departed shortly afterwards after scoring a spectacular 65 runs off 45 balls to put MI in a winning position. It came right down to the wire with MI needing 5 runs off the last over. But Cameron Green and Tim David made sure they were home, despite the match going into the last ball with the visitors needing 2 runs.
