Former Australian left-arm spinner, Brad Hogg criticized Joe Root's aggressive approach in the first Ashes Test, where England lost to Australia in Birmingham.

The right-hand batter has changed a lot in his batting approach recently. From playing the ground shots to the lofted reverse scoop, he has a lot of shots in his bucket. He has evolved as one of the greatest after stepping down from captaincy in Test cricket.

Root's unbeaten 118 runs, including seven fours and four sixes, came in England's first innings of Ashes 2023. England declared their innings after 78 overs, amassing 393 runs with a loss of 8 wickets.

I would have been disappointed as the coach with that type of shot: Brad Hogg

In the second innings, he failed to capitalize on the start and got dismissed after scoring just 46 runs with five fours and a six in his innings. He was dismissed by Australian veteran off-spinner, Nathan Lyon when Root tried to down the track to smack him.

Brad Hogg, on his YouTube channel, praised Root's brilliant performance in Birmingham but criticized the slog shot against Lyon."He's playing a different style of cricket. The Bazball has come out we're seeing reverse sweeps which we've never seen in Test cricket before, against fast bowling. That's just sensational; it's never been heard of before," Hogg said on his YouTube channel.

But with the Bazball in the second innings, I thought he was over-aggressive. The shot that he got out to Nathan Lyon was a slog. It was not a cricket shot, and if he is playing T20 cricket, I would have been disappointed as the coach with that type of shot," the 52-year-old asserted.
