The ODI World Cup 2023 is just a few weeks away, Bangladesh cricket team has announced star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as the skipper for both Asia Cup 2023 and 50-over World Cup. Shakib will be leading the Bangladesh side in both marquee events, apart from the skipper announcement, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced 17 member squad for Asia Cup, which is set to begin on August 30 and the WC 2023 on October 5, fans are reacting to social media as squads are announced for the tournaments.

However, The Tigers will face New Zealand in a white ball series in September before travelling to India for the 13th edition of the World Cup. It is pertinent to mention that Shakib replaced star batter, Tamim Iqbal as the skipper of the side, as Tamim was ruled out of the Asia Cup with a back injury. Now, after this decision, the veteran all-rounder will be leading the side in all three formats of the game.

"We have appointed Shakib as the captain for the Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squads will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members," said Nazmul Hassan, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president.

Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh in 2011 ODI World Cup

The 36-year-old Shakib Al Hasan's last ODI as captain of his side was against Ireland in May 2017. Speaking of his overall record, the spinning all-rounder has captained his side in 52 ODIs, 19 Tests, and 39 T20s. Shakib's last assignment as ODI captain of Bangladesh was against Ireland at Malahide on May 12, 2017, and the match ended without a result. The left-arm spinner made his debut in 2007 against India.

It is pertinent to mention that Shakib has led in World Cup before this stint as he was the captain of the Bangladesh team in the ODI World Cup 2011, which was co-jointly hosted in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Interestingly, Shakib was the favourite after Tamim's injury concerns, but as the report suggested, few doubted as it was assumed that the veteran Bangladeshi cricketers would not be accepting extra responsibility along with Tests and T20Is.
