Pakistan’s veteran batter Shoaib Malik's heroics with both bat and ball for the Jaffna Kings were not enough as they lost against Dambulla Aura in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023. Malik, in the 11th match of the tournament, picked up two wickets and scored unbeaten 74 runs in 53 balls, but Kings ended on 125/7 after 20 overs, nine runs short of the required target. While Hasan Ali got the Player of the Match award for his 3/20 figure in the last LPL 2023 game.
At the start of the play, Aura struggled to bat against the quality bowling attack of Jaffna, as three players reached double-digit scores. Kusal Perera was the highest scorer with 41 runs in 36 balls, and the Kings managed 134 runs in 20 overs, which looked good as both their openers didn’t trouble the scoreboard.
Whereas in the chase, Jaffna lost both openers for the eight-run mark inside the first three overs, they were losing key wickets from the start. Ali was dominant with the ball at the start of the innings, as he removed both the openers. Malik came to bat when the team score was 3/10 in four overs, and despite the quality bowling, the 41-year-old formed a crucial partnership with the lower-order batter.
Shoaib Malik's three sixes in the last over were not enough for his side in LPL 2023 -
However, the former Pakistan skipper was unbeaten with his 74-run innings, which included 11 boundaries but as 34 runs were needed in the last over, Malik tried and hit three sixes and one four, but it was not enough to chase down the target. Shoaib countrymen Hasan's bowling was very crucial, as he only gave 20 runs in four overs with three wickets. So in the end Ali earned the Player of the Match award for his amazing bowling spell.
Looking at the points table of LPL 2023, Aura, with this win, has reached the top of the table; now they have three wins in five matches. However, Jaffna, after the loss, has gone to the fourth spot with two wins in five games. In the next clash of the league, B-Love Kandy will be up against the Galle Titans on August 8 at Pallekele.
