Sanju Samson has been ruled out of the T20I series against Sri Lanka after he hurt his left knee in the first T20I against Mumbai. The injury happened after he attempted a catch in the first over of the Sri Lankan chase at the Wankhede on Wednesday. He caught the ball but could not hold on to the catch.

Samson fielded for the duration of the game but since he was experiencing swelling and so was asked to seek medical advice because of which he was advised to rest and rehabilitation after he stayed back in Mumbai for scans and consulted a specialist. Jitesh Sharma has been named his replacement.

This has been a tough road for Samson as although he was selected in the Indian Team and this was his biggest chance to make it count he could not capitalise on the opportunity as He went to play a leg-side shot to a ball that was wide outside the off-stump and there was a leading edge which led to the ball being caught at third man.

He has scored 301 runs in 17 matches at an average of 20.06 and a strike rate of 133.77. He has scored one fifty and no hundred as yet in T20Is. He is being looked upon as a stroke maker who can play the middle order role for the team in the side in addition to being the keeper.

His shot selection has been in question at times. Even after he got out in the game against Sri Lanka, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar questioned how the right-handed batter threw his wicket away and was miffed with the way he played the shot.

In the Indian T20 League, he has scored 3526 runs at an average of 29.14 and a strike rate of 135.71. He has scored three hundreds and 17 fifties in 138 matches. He led Rajasthan to a second-place finish in the last edition in 2022. He has got limited opportunities but has failed to make it count in the international scene.

Twitter was bemused when Samson got injured and subsequently ruled out let us take a look at the reactions here-
