Quinton De Kock, the South African wicket-keeper batsman, has recently announced his decision to retire from One Day International (ODI) cricket after the 2023 World Cup. This news has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, as De Kock is widely regarded as one of the best ODI players in the world.

De Kock's decision to retire from ODIs comes as a surprise to many, considering he is only 30 years old and still at the peak of his career. However, it seems that he wants to focus on other formats of the game and prolong his T20 career.

Throughout his ODI career, De Kock has been a consistent performer for South Africa. He has scored 5,966 runs in this format at an impressive average of over 44.86. His aggressive batting style and ability to score quick runs have made him a vital asset for his team. He previously announced his retirement from test cricket in 2021 December.

South Africa's ODI World Cup squad announced

De Kock's retirement will undoubtedly leave a void in South Africa's ODI squad. His presence behind the stumps and ability to provide explosive starts at the top of the order will be sorely missed. However, this also presents an opportunity for young talents to step up and fill his shoes.

On Tuesday, September 5, South Africa unveiled the 15-member World Cup with no big surprises. In addition to De Kock, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Reeza Hendricks, and the injured pair of Keshav Maharaj and Sisanda Magala who have made a full recovery, Temba Bavuma will continue to captain the team. Janneman Malan, who averages 47.90 but lost his form following the India series in October of last year, is the unfortunate one to be left out.

South Africa ODI World Cup 2023 squad: Temba Bavuma (capt), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Sisanda Magala, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen
