India completed a dominant victory over the visiting Australian side in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. India was helped by their spin twins Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who took a cumulative 15 wickets within the two innings.

Various small snippets from the game went viral among fans; one such made it into the headlines. This time it’s the former India head coach Ravi Shastri whose sharp remark on former Australia batter Matthew Hayden’s attempts to defend Scott Boland’s loss of concentration on the field put him at his place in an instant.

Scott Boland missed a sitter in the 122nd over

In the fourth ball of the 122nd over bowled by Nathan Lyon, Mohammed Shami tried to clear the long-on fence with a big lofted shot. However, the pacer couldn’t get decent contact on the ball as it went high up in the air, seeming to be a comfortable catch for Scott Boland fielding in the deep. However, Boland, playing his first game in India, could not judge the flight of the ball as he made a howler of the clear chance. Shami, batting at 7, then added another handy 30 runs.

Matthew Hayden theorized that the shadow of the stadium roof impacted Boland’s judgement. However, Ravi Shastri was quick to dismiss his attempts to defend the Australian fielder saying,  "Is that an excuse, Haydos? Dropping a simple catch like this at this level."

"No, definitely not... Ravi Shastri has been all over me in this entire Test match," Hayden responded.

Interestingly, this match was not the best fielding game from either side. India also dropped a few vital catches at the slips, with the out-of-form Virat Kohli being the main culprit. India, however, has taken a 1-0 lead in the series after a dominant win in Nagpur. The two sides will meet next in Delhi on February 17 for the second Test.
