One of the many intriguing storylines that has been gathering momentum during this season of the Indian Premier League involves the future of MS Dhoni and whether this will be his last season in the tournament donning the famous yellow jersey of the Chennai Super Kings.

The former Indian skipper last played for India in 2019 and announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020, but has been going strong in the IPL ever since its inception in 2008. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, three seasons of the IPL were disrupted and played either outside India or in a strict bubble within the country, preventing home fans from coming to the ground to support their local sides. The 2023 edition is the first to follow the traditional home-and-away structure of the tournament once again, and fans have made their presence felt throughout the country.

Dhoni has previously expressed his desire to finish his career in front of the Chennai fans, thousands of whom follow him and the team across the country. While Chennai’s home games at the MA Chidambaram Stadium are always thrilling affairs with lots of local support, even away games have turned into home games for Chennai thanks to the sea of yellow in the stands, waiting for a glimpse of the great man on the field.

However, a recent video of MS Dhoni emerged ahead of his side’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday, May 14, in which he can be seen asking the fans to quiet down by putting his finger on his lips. In reality, Dhoni was just asking the fans present at the stadium while Chennai were practising not to make so much noise and keep calm.

The fans’ excitement is somewhat understandable, as this is the SuperKings’ final home game of the 2023 season, and possibly the last-ever time the ‘Thala’ takes to the field in front of his adoring fans. As such, people have been waiting in line all night long for tickets for the game.

Whatever decision Dhoni makes about his future, this is not the last fans will see of him and Chennai Super Kings in the tournament. The men in yellow are comfortable in second place on the table and can almost guarantee a spot in the playoffs with victory over KKR in Chennai on Sunday.
