International cricket board announces umpires for inaugural match of 2023 ODI World Cup

The umpires for the inaugural match of the 2023 ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad between England and New Zealand is announced.

The umpires for the inaugural match of the 2023 ODI World Cup have been announced by the international cricket board. The rematch of the 2019 ODI World Cup final will see Kumar Dharmasena as the umpire in the match. Along with the Sri Lankan, Nitin Menon will also be the on-field umpire in the match. The international cricket board has announced the other officials as well.

Javagal Srinath will be the referee for the match. The third umpire for the match will be Paul Wilson and Shahid Saikat will be the fourth umpire in the match. In 2015, Dharmasena created history and became the first person to be in the Cricket World Cup final as both the player and the umpire. The feat of the Sri Lankan umpire caught the attention of the people back then.

Nitin Menon will be making his debut as an on-field umpire in the ODI World Cup. Saikat from Bangladesh will create history and become the first umpire from his country to be an umpire in an ODI Cricket World Cup match. All the above-mentioned names are part of the 20-member panel of umpires that were announced by the international cricket board for the tournament.

'Kumar Dharmasena and Nitin Menon will be the on-field umpires' - International cricket board

International cricket board confirmed the umpires for the inaugural match of the tournament in a press release. "Kumar Dharmasena and Nitin Menon will be the on-field umpires for the opening match of the Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 between England and New Zealand," said the statement of the board. Along with Marais Erasmus, Dharmasena was the umpire in the 2019 ODI World Cup final between England and New Zealand.

Some of the umpires like Marais Erasmus, Rod Tucker, Richard Kettleborough, Michael Gough, Chris Gaffaney, Joel Wilson, Richard Illingworth, and Paul Reiffel will be in the tournament as the umpires for the second time in a row.  At the age of 39, Menon will be the youngest umpire in the tournament. Ahsan Raza, Chris Brown, Wharf, Shahid and Adrian Holdstock will be making their debut in the tournament.
