The Australian squad for the ODI series against India and South Africa is out. The 18-member squad has an amazing set of players and will also be the likely combination for the ODI World Cup later this year. It means that the players who are selected in the squad are likely to be the contenders for a spot in the World Cup squad. One name is missing from the squad, who was a regular in Australia in the last few years.
Marnus Labuschagne was dropped from the Australian squad. Test number 3 of Australia had a mediocre series with the bat in Ashes against England. But the series for him being dropped pretty much has to do with career stats in ODIs till now and a bad current form. The 29-year-old has played 30 ODIs in his career and scored 847 runs at an average of 31.37, at a strike rate of 83.2, including a hundred.
A not-so-great current form in ODIs
These are not great stats for a batter who has a good record in the longest format of the game. Labuschagne has not been able to replicate his form in the longest format to the ODI format. The World number 5 Test batter has not shown promises in the ODI format either. A strike rate of 83.2 in the fast-moving game will not help, especially when you have Steve Smith who can do the job of anchoring better.
The Australian team has a lot of All-rounders. The pure batters and the pure bowlers in the team have certain roles. Unfortunately, Labuschagne could not have made the squad considering his current form and skill set. The middle-order batter is slow in his approach, which cannot get him a place ahead of other players in the squad who bat with intent.
The current form of Labuschagne has not been great either. Since 2022, Labuschagne has had 374 runs in 17 innings at an average of 24.93, at a strike rate of 74.95 in ODIs. In 2023, Labuschagne has only 43 runs in 2 innings at a strike rate of 64.18, which justifies him getting dropped from the side.
