Cheteshwar Pujara was handed the vice-captaincy for the two Test match series against Bangladesh. This evoked a strong reaction from the fans as they all expected Rishabh Pant to be named the vice-captain for this series. This was a bolt from the blue for Pujara himself who last played in the rescheduled 5th Test in England.
Due to problems with his strike rate and not scoring fast enough he was dropped for the two-match series against Sri Lanka which happened before the England Test. He ensured the selectors never forgot him as he scored 4 centuries in County Cricket and also made runs in the Royal London One Day Cup.
In the first Test against Bangladesh, he came in when the chips were down. At 48-3, India were in a spot of bother. Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli were all back in the hut. Pujara can in and played a typical Pujara knock of 90 off 203 balls with 11 fours. He was willing to make the hard grind and tire the bowlers down as he had always done.
He was there for 203 balls before he was bowled by Taijul Islam. It was a superb ball. He spun the ball from the middle and off. The bowl was bowled flatter. The ball turned much more than he anticipated, and it spun past the bat and knocked the off stump. He has unfortunately missed out on a century but has proved his worth playing a rock-solid knock.
He proved that he could lead from the front having been announced as vice-captain for the series and showed that he can take responsibility by playing a superb knock under pressure. This knock was a timely innings from Indiaโs rock in a Test match batting lineup that is filled with stroke makers. Pujara is the big difference and has been the big difference for India.
Players like Pujara are once in a generation that plays cricket the old-fashioned way but has shown that they are worth their weight in gold. He has bailed out India from many such crises before and has used his experience to good effect in this match.
