Five-time winners and IPL powerhouses Mumbai Indians have faced huge issues off the field in recent times. Rohit Sharma was recently replaced as the skipper of the side by Hardik Pandya. The 30-year-old recently made his return from Gujarat Titans thanks to a huge trade deal.

Cameron Green who was one of the highlights of the 2023 season was traded to Royal Challengers Bangalore. During the IPL Auction 2024, Mumbai Indians brought a few international fast bowlers.

South African sensation Gerald Coetzee was brought for INR 5 Crores. The investment is said to be long-term as the right-arm fast bowler is considered one of the best new talents. Dilshan Madushanka and Nuwan Thushara have also joined the men in blue and gold. Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi has been picked up as a backup option.

SWOT ANALYSIS OF MI

Strength – Impressive batting and bowling unit

Mumbai Indians over the years have had the best batting unit in the history of the IPL tournaments. Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav in the top three can give any bowling unit nightmares. With the ball, there is Jasprit Bumrah along with the new additions to the squad. One cannot forget Jason Behrendorff is still in the team and Akash Madhwal has shown great talent with the ball.

Weakness – No Backup wicket-keeper

Ishan Kishan is set to be the frontline wicket-keeper for the Mumbai Indians unit. The 25-year-old has been a great servant to the franchise for the last six years. In case of an injury, Mumbai Indians just have Vishnu Vinod as a player who can don the wicket-keeping gloves. It is a huge mistake from the MI franchise not to have picked a young wicketkeeper during the auctions.

Opportunities – Complete team set to compete for a title?

This year, Mumbai Indians have been seen as one of the best units to be assembled for the IPL 2024 season. With the addition of Mohammad Nabi to the team, MI perhaps has the best bench strength in the league. After their IPL win in 2020, Mumbai lacked the depth needed and this year they seemed to have addressed that issue.

Threats – too many injury-prone players

Jasprit Bumrah has just made his comeback to international cricket after a long injury lay-off. Skipper Hardik Pandya himself has been out since mid-October due to an injury he picked up during the ODI World Cup 2023. IPL is known for its unforgiving schedule and MI need to be wary of players picking up injuries. Rohit Sharma too has had his fair share of injury issues and with the World T20 around the corner, the team has to be at its fittest.
