In a big statement from the Indian Cricket Board and the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee, they have said that they want to turn a new leaf in T20 cricket, and the board want to move on from the senior players and give fresh faces a chance in the shortest format.

When the selectors were asked for the rationale behind the T20 squad being named against Sri Lanka. They said that the team has been put out keeping a future roadmap for Indian cricket on priority. As per reports, the board has decided to draft in young blood and no longer favour the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and R Ashwin.

“We have to plan for the 2023 T20 World Cup. Some of our top players 35-36, don’t fit into long term plans for the teams. And if you don’t build a team now, when you build it. Yes, some of the top guys won’t be included in T20 anymore and they have been informed about it,” an Indian Cricket Board official confirmed.

Hardik Pandya could become India's full-time T20 captain

This decision has been taken in mind to phase out the players from the T20 format and field a completely new team filled with youngsters. India in the past has been trolled for playing too many senior players in the shortest format and not giving a lot of chances to the youngsters.

Hardik Pandya will lead India in the T20 series against Sri Lanka with Suryakumar Yadav to be his deputy. Reports were saying that Hardik could permanently captain the T20 side. Though there are no confirmations on this development yet, it looks very likely to happen.

KL Rahul has been in torrid form in the 20-20 format and has been found wanting for his bad form and poor shot selection as a batter and also poor captaincy when he has led the side. In the T20 World Cup in Australia, he scored just 128 runs in 6 matches at an average of 21.33 and a strike rate of 120.75. Looking at Rahul's poor form Hardik could well be a permanent appointee as T20 captain.
