On day 4 of Lord’s test, England came up with better plans to tackle the Australian batters. The well-set Khawaja batted well at the start of the day. Steve Smith continued hitting boundaries for fun. That’s when the English captain Stokes asked his bowlers to start the bouncer barrage. James Anderson was taken out of the attack. Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue, and Stuart Broad bowled short deliveries to the batters in the middle.

The relentless efforts of the bowlers was supported by the captain Stokes, who deployed a unique field set for short balls, almost like a Tetrahedron structure in the leg side behind the batters. Usman Khawaja was the first batter to fall into the trap. The Southpaw was undone by Stuart Broad. The new batter Travis Head was dropped in the very first ball by James Anderson. Stokes had placed Anderson square of the wicket, exactly where Head likes to score runs.

Joe Root claims a stunning catch at short leg

While the dropped catch was unfortunate for England, the bowlers continued their short ball ploy. The Australian star batter Steve Smith was dismissed by Josh Tongue. The dejected Smith returned to the pavilion and in walked Cameron Green. Head, who got a reprieve earlier, was barely surviving in the middle. The Southpaw survived yet another close chance from James Anderson. The stay in the middle grew endlessly tiresome for Head.

As Stuart Broad directed a perfect bouncer just below the shoulder height of Head, the batter had no choice but to bring the bat to face the delivery. Joe Root who was stationed at the short leg, dived towards his left and took a fantastic return catch in just one hand. Head looked disappointed at the dismissal. But English players celebrated the wicket they deserved. Root’s stunning catch helped England to claim the honors of the first session of the fourth day of the second session at the home of cricket.
