The first of the five-match Test series between India and England turned out to be a thriller during the four days. In the game that started on Thursday, the Three Lions won the toss and elected to bat first. After having a good start of 55 runs for the first wicket, they were reduced to 60/3.
Jonny Bairstow and former skipper, Joe Root put together 61 runs before the latter was removed by Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel was removed by Bairstow. Skipper Ben Stokes hit 70 runs and alongside the lower order, the team reached 246 all-out. For the home side, spin duo, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each.
On the other hand, Patel and Jasprit Bumrah took two each. In reply, the two-time WTC finalists reached 436 all-out, with KL Rahul (86), Yashasvi Jaiswal (80), Ravindra Jadeja (87), and valuable contributions from other batters. With this, they took a lead of 190 and were set to win another game at home after taking a 100-plus lead.
India lose at home for the first time despite 100-plus lead
In the second innings, trailing by 190 runs, the Ben Stokes-led side fought back well although they had a few hiccups. Starting with an opening partnership of 45, the team was reduced to 165/5. At this stage, the likes of Ollie Pope and Ben Foakes put together 112 runs for the sixth wicket. The former went onto score four less than a double hundred before being the last wicket to fall.
They ended up getting 420 all-out in the second innings, asking the Asian side to chase 231 runs with five sessions left. Unlike the first innings, the Rohit Sharma-led side looked like getting in the shell and not playing freely. This led to them being reduced to 119/7. The likes of Ashwin and KS Bharat took the team close before both batters became the fifth and sixth wicket for debutant Tom Hartley. The last batting pair of Bumrah and Siraj did their best but the latter was stumped in the last over of the day.
With this, they lost the game by 28 runs and the Three Lions are leading by 1-0.
