The fourth match of the Super 4s saw India win a thrilling encounter against the Sri Lanka team by 41 runs, and with this win, they registered their seat in the finals of the 16th edition of the Asia Cup.
After winning the toss, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma decided to bat first on a pitch that offered significant assistance to spinners. Rohit initiated his innings in a stylish manner, displaying his elegant batting by skillfully scoring boundaries. Conversely, Shubman Gill, the younger batsman, adopted a more cautious approach, aiming to capitalize on the solid foundation established by the team.
Similar to what the duo have been doing, both gave the team a brilliant start of 80 runs in just 11 overs, but then Dunith Wellalage halted the Indian proceedings.
The 20-year-old left-arm orthodox bowler completely dismantled the Indian top order as he dismissed Gill (19) in his very first ball of the spell. Dunith did not stop there, in the very next over he got rid of former India skipper Virat Kohli (3). The terror of Wellalage was such that in his third over of the spell he cleaned up well-settled Indian skipper Rohit (53).
The likes of Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul tried clawing their way back into the game but this time around it was the part-timer Charith Asalanka who got the wicket of Ishan (33). The dismissal of Ishan certainly opened the floodgates of wickets for India as the team went from 170/5 to 213 all out. Wellalage and Asalanka were starring with the ball for Sri Lanka as both the spinners took five and four wickets respectively.
In pursuit of a tricky total, the Sri Lanka team did not have the best of starts as India's premier fast bowler wreaked havoc on their top-order batters. Bumrah first dismissed Pathum Nissanka (6) and then foxed the Kusal Mendis (15) with a deceptive slower yorker.
The India pace battery kept on taking wickets at regular intervals of the game as well as picked wickets at essential junctures. Kuldeep Yadav, along with Ravindra Jadeja, bowled brilliantly in the middle overs picking up essential wickets of Sadeera Samarawickrama (17), Asalanka (22) along with Dhananjaya de Silva (41), and Dasun Shanaka (9).
Despite Dhananjaya and Wellalage (42) stitching a threatening 63-run partnership, the grit of Indian bowlers finally in the end made sure that India won the match by 41 runs. Kuldeep was yet again a star with the ball for India with his four wickets and was well supported by Jadeja and Bumrah who took two wickets each.
