Gautam Gambhir warned Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and said that the team must win against Australia in the upcoming series. India will face Australia for a three-match T20I series starting on September 20. Ahead of the series, the former India opener has sent a firm warning to the Rohit Sharma-led team.
During a press interaction, Gambhir said that the team must look to win the series to win the 20-20 World Cup 2022. He further drew comparisons between the 2007 20-20 World Cup and the upcoming one and said that the team back then won it because it won against Australia.
“I have said this earlier and I am saying this again. India can not win World Cup if they do not beat Australia,” Gautam Gambhir said while addressing the presser organized by Star Sports. He highlighted the strength of the Australian team and warned India to remain cautious.
We defeated them in the semi-finals: Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir went further and recalled the 2007 20-20 World Cup semifinals against the Baggy Greens. He further reminded everyone of the 2011 World Cup quarterfinals. The former cricketer added that the team must win against Australia
“I mean look at the 2007 20-20 World Cup, we defeated them in the semi-finals. In the 2011 ODI World Cup, we thrashed them in the quarter-finals. Australia is one of the most competitive teams out there and you will have to beat them if you want to win any competition,” he added.
The Indian team, however, will look to win the series if not for Gautam Gambhir anyways. This will be a great test for the Men in Blue and they’ll look to make the most out of it. The Indian brigade had a poor outing in the Asia Cup 2022 and bowed out in the Super 4s round.
However, one can only hope that the team would reorganize things and keep moving. A win in the Australia series might give them supreme confidence ahead of the mega event down south.
