Former Australia skipper Steve Smith is about to make his 100th appearance in the red-ball form of cricket and is aiming to capture the prestigious Ashes series against a Ben Stokes-led England side. The stylish right-handed batter will be making his three-figure appearance in Test matches during the third 2023 Ashes Test, which commences on Thursday in Leeds at Headingley.
The 34-year-old Smith's 100th Game will be the most important turning point of the series as the next Ashes test resumes on Thursday, July 6 at Headingley in Leeds. Notably, the brilliant batsman has been putting up incredible performances throughout his career, from his first century against India in 2010 to his dazzling double century against England in 2019.
In the same vein, Australian cricketer Smith stated that he had the desire to defeat England by capturing his 100th Test match when the two arch-rivals met for the next Test. He also further expressed that he is confident of smashing high again on English soil.
“It is something that has been on my bucket list, to win an Ashes series in England. What a way to top it off, if I could do it in my 100th game, it would be special for sure. I know the person I am; I know how I want to go about things. I am out here playing my game and for my country. Everyone can say what they like, it doesn’t bother me. I am comfortable in my own skin,” Smith said.
I didn’t enjoy that at all, just sitting and watching the Ben Stokes show: Smith
Additionally, the star batter has confessed that it was hard for him to sit out and see Stokes perform his spell in Leeds four years ago. “I didn’t enjoy that at all. Just sitting and watching the Ben Stokes show, that almost occurred again in this game. To be able to walk out at Headingley, it will be a great moment for me to tick off 100 games,” he added further.
