The separation of celebrity couple Shakira and Gerard Piqué in June 2022, after 11 years together, shocked everyone. The Colombian singer announced her split with Piqué, accusing the former Spanish footballer of cheating on her. Now, more than a year after leaving their family in limbo, Shakira has opened up about the difficult time and exactly how she found out about Piqué's cheating.
In a new interview with People en Español, the "Queen of Latin Music" revealed the cheating allegations surfaced at the worst possible time. Shakira said she found out her ex had betrayed her while her father was in the ICU. "Everything came together, my home was falling apart. I found out from the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU."
“I thought I wouldn’t survive that long.
However, Shakira said her father, William Mebarak Chadid, is now doing well. “His recovery has been very hard and slow, but he is a wonderful man and an endearing character to all of us who always surprises us with his strength,” the singer and songwriter said of her dad.
Shakira now believes she is capable of facing any challenge
Shakira said in a statement in June last year: “We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding."
Prior to their breakup, the pair welcomed two sons, Milan (9) and Sasha (7). However, in August 2022, Piqué was spotted with his now-girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti, proving the rumours were true.
Meanwhile, the 46-year-old singer said that she now has a strong mind and is confident in her ability to confront any challenge. “There are days of days. There are days when I feel strong, there are days when I feel that I have lived through so many hard things, that I can face anything.”
“All my life I was afraid of facing the things that I have had to face in the end, and I have survived. I thought that I could not but the resilience of the human being is inexhaustible, and more so that of women,” she added.
