Emiliano Martinez repeated his controversial celebration in Argentina's first game since last year's World Cup victory, despite receiving backlash from all corners. Lionel Messi led Argentina to lift the coveted crown in Qatar with goalkeeper Martinez also playing a vital role in their successful journey, which earned him the Golden Glove award. The 30-year-old performed an obscene pose with the award, which drew a lot of criticism from pundits and fans around the world.

Martinez, alongside his teammates, recreated his infamous celebration after winning 2-0 in a friendly match against Panama on Thursday.

Second-half goals from Lionel Messi and Thiago Almada saw the world champions continue their run at El Monumental Stadium. Messi scored his 800th career goal with a free kick in the 89th minute to give Argentina a double lead. After his milestone achievement, the 2022 World Cup Golden Ball winner thanked the people of Argentina and revealed that winning the World Cup was the moment he had dreamed of.

"I want to thank all of you for the affection we have been receiving. Not only for being world champions but also for Copa America. We had said that we were going to do everything we could for this.

"Personally, I have always dreamed of this moment. To be able to celebrate with you, to come to my country, to Argentina, to lift a Copa America, the Finalissima and the greatest one, which is the World Cup," he said.

Martinez revealed what Messi said about his controversial celebration

Emiliano Martinez pulled off an incredible save in extra time to deny Randal Kolo Muani and take the game to penalties in the final of the Qatar World Cup. The Aston Villa goalkeeper continued his heroics in the shootout and was instrumental in helping La Albiceleste lift the title.

Martinez was heavily criticized for his bizarre golden glove celebration but defended it as a joke with his teammates. He also revealed that Messi told him not to do it again.

โ€œThe gesture I made with the best goalkeeper trophy was a joke with my teammates. I had already done it at the Copa America, and they all said to me: 'No way' to do it again. Even Leo told me that. I did it for them, nothing more. It lasted a second and that was it.โ€

However, the decision to recreate the celebration has sparked criticism from fans on social media.
