Mohammad Kaif was one of the most exciting talents in India in the early 2000s. In the year 2000, India won the under-19 World Cup under Kaif’s captaincy. Yuvraj Singh was the player of the tournament. The two were soon drafted to the Indian team. While Yuvraj went on to become a great player in limited overs cricket, Kaif had some big moments with the bat for India and is remembered for the knock in the finals of the Natwest series against England in 2002, with his u19 teammate Yuvraj.
Regarded as one of the best fielders in India, Kaif was groomed in the Indian team under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly. The 42-year-old had a good run in the Indian team under Ganguly's leadership. Despite not playing that well, Kaif got good backing from his captain. When asked to pick the best captain he had played under in a TV show, Kaif was quick to pick Sourav Ganguly as the best captain he had played under in International cricket.
Mohammad Kaif praises Sourav Ganguly
“I would say, Sourav Ganguly. I remember he told me that I should go out there and give my best shot and that he is there to back me, he is there to support me. That's a big comment. As a young guy, if you have a captain like Sourav Ganguly, you get emboldened while playing for India. Sourav Ganguly was amazing, he was fantastic. Captaincy means you need to be a leader, lead from the front, pick the right players and back them. Ganguly built the team.” said the former cricketer about Ganguly’s leadership and captaincy.
The former Indian captain who celebrated his 51st birthday on Saturday (July 8), is considered one of the best Indian captains in cricket. Players who played under Ganguly consider him the best Indian cricket team captain. As a captain, Ganguly was responsible for the transformation on the Indian side. The Kolkata-born cricketer was a successful batter and scored 7212 and 11363 runs in Tests and ODIs respectively.
