In one season of the Premier League, Erling Haaland has rewritten the history books. In what is his maiden season, he has scored a record 35 goals in the league. The Norwegian player showed that he was fast on his feet and as quick as lightning. Halland put his name on the scoresheet when Manchester City won 3-0 against West Ham on Wednesday. City trumped back to the top of the table courtesy of this win.
When the 35th goal was scored, the striker from City went past the magic number of 34 which was earlier set by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer who were the record holders way back in the 1990s. “A bit unreal to be honest,” said Haaland on the scale of the achievement. “I wasn’t thinking of this kind of record when I came here and to break it means I’ve done something special and I’m really proud of this moment.” Haaland said after scripting history.
He is a goal machine- Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland
When it comes to strike rates in football, Haaland comes way above his peers. His counterparts played in long seasons which had 42 games in the season and yet Haaland ranks above all in terms of goals and also in terms of strike rate. When it comes to Shearer, he played all 42 games in the 1994-95 season which helped Blackburn bag the title.
When it comes to Haaland from the numbers point of view, he has reached 35 goals at a rate of one every 72 minutes in just 31 matches. “If you were building a centre-forward from the ground up, Erling is what you would be left with,” Shearer told the Athletic.
“He’s a goal machine, someone who is quick and direct, who is physically strong and good in the air, who can score with both feet and whose positioning is fantastic.” “We knew he scored goals everywhere and thought he could do it. He understands what we want to do but we have to admit the impact of how he adjusted to the team and the league was so quick. “Immediately we saw he is a guy when you provide him balls, he can score all different types of goals.” Pep Guardiola told the Press.
