Shubman Gill first represented India in the ODI format four years ago on 31st January 2019. He was looked at as the next big thing after the world witnessed his performance at 2018 U-19 World Cup. He had played as a middle -order batter in that tournament.

Now in 2023, Gill has repaid the faith to the Indian Team management by scoring a huge volume of runs. This has happened after he was given a long rope by the team Management. He is primarily opening the innings across all formats.

The Punjab born batter has justified the selectors' decision to play him in ODIs ahead of Shikhar Dhawan, who has scored 6793 runs at an average of 44.11 with 17 centuries and 39 half centuries. Gill has made plethora runs, of late but flown under the radar to Virat Kohli in this three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. He recently made his T20 debut against Sri Lanka.

He had the most runs behind Kohli with one hundred and one fifty in this three match ODI series against the Islanders. The 23 year old in modest fashion said that he had the golden opportunity of scoring big but could not convert half-centuries to centuries in the games where he made fifties.

“Felt very good. Always good when you convert a start to a big one. When you are batting with someone like Rohit bhai or Virat bhai, you don’t have to do much. We were just talking about whom to target and when to target,” Gill had told India’s  broadcaster Star Sports during the mid-innings break on Sunday.

In his last 10 ODI innings dating back to August 2022, Gill has scored 525 runs at an average of 58.33 and a strike rate of 108.24 with the help of two centuries and half-centuries each. He said he kept Kohli’s advice in mind when he scored his second hundred at the Green Field Stadium on Sunday.
