India won the series against Australia 2-1 to win the fourth consecutive Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The final Test in Ahmedabad ended in a draw and now the players of both the teams are focused on the three-match ODI series starting on March 17. Meanwhile, India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the 50-over contest due to a recurring back injury. The skipper of the Kolkata franchise may also miss some matches in the upcoming Indian T20 League.

The middle-order batter did not come out to bat in India's first innings in the last Test, and Indian captain Rohit Sharma said during the post-match media interaction that Iyer ‘does not seem to be doing that well.’ According to a source, Iyer is currently struggling to walk and specialist doctors have been consulted by the Indian Cricket Board for the matter.

'It did not look that great when it happened': Rohit Sharma

It is learned that he complained of swelling in his lower back during the final Test after spending almost two full days on the field. The 28-year-old, who flew out of Ahmedabad even before the Test ended, is currently recovering from his injury at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

"Poor guy. It just was such an unfortunate incident. He had to wait all day to bat and then when the day got over, the issue he had with his back, recurred. He was sent to the hospital to take scans. I don’t know the exact report of the scans, but he does not seem to be doing that well. Obviously, that’s why he’s not present here, so we don’t know the exact status of how long he will take to recover or when he will be back. When it happened, it did not look that great. I hope he recovers quickly and comes back and plays again." Rohit told the reporters.

This is not the first time that Iyer has been sidelined due to injuries. He missed the home ODIs against New Zealand as well as the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Nagpur last month.
