India after losing 2-1 against Bangladesh in the recently-concluded 3-match ODI series, will now play a two-match Test series against Bangladesh. There will be a change in the leadership order as Cheteshwar Pujara will be the vice-captain for the series, and KL Rahul will lead the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma. The Test side has a new look overall for the 2-match Test series.
Pujara has been in outstanding form in County cricket and also in Domestic Cricket which made him earn a recall into the Indian Test side after he was dropped from the side for the Test series against Sri Lanka. He played the final Test match against England which was rescheduled.
"The way he scored runs after getting dropped, he has set an example for young players on how to make a comeback. He went to play County cricket, he scored centuries in four-day matches and 50-over games, which prompted the selectors to recall him. He made the selectors surrender in front of him," Mohammed Kaif said in an interaction with Sony Sports Network.
Age is a plus point in Test Cricket - Mohammad Kaif
"Age has nothing to do with cricket. It is a skill-based game. It's not football, where you have to run up and down continuously during the match. In fact, age is a plus point. You learn with experience and improve. Pujara, Kohli and Rohit and prime examples. Test cricket is a skill-based format, you have to play for days and you need experience for that. You need players who can bat on turning, as well as seaming tracks, and you only get better with time. Pujara is a prime example," He added.
He also went on to say that the Indian Team needs players like Pujara who is willing to grind it out and is from a different mould as compared to the stroke makers who are present in the Indian Team. He said the right-hand batter can also play on spin conducive and pace-friendly tracks and that age is not a criterion for a player of his stature.
