Rishabh Pant showed a glimpse of his old self in the first Test against Bangladesh which was held at Chattogram, scoring a counter-attacking 46 off 45 balls with six fours and two sixes. He built a partnership with Pujara and got India out of trouble. This will make India breathe easy as Pant has not been in form in limited-overs cricket.

Though India will be happy that Pant has picked up from where he left off in the longest format, one aspect of his game that is widely being talked about is his fitness. There have been questions raised about his game on this front. Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt made some scathing comments regarding Pant and his fitness. He went on to say that Pant plays shots which are out-of-the-box and also an attacking brand of cricket. He said that Pant could have pulled off those shots more easily had he been a lot fitter.

He is under the level in terms of fitness: Salman Butt

"Rishabh Pant was playing the way he likes to, but he went for something innovative and got out. It was a weird dismissal as the ball hit the bat, pad before rattling the stumps. I always speak on Rishabh Pant's fitness because the kind of shots he plays and tries to innovate, it would be easier for him execute those shots if he was fit. I think he is overweight. Definitely, he is overweight and because of that, he is not very agile. He is under the level where he should be, in terms of fitness," Salman Butt was quoted as saying.

India are in the driver's seat in the first Test at present, they did well to get to 404 in the first innings after they were tottering at 48-3 in the first innings. Cheteshwar Pujara stitched important partnerships with Pant and Shreyas Iyer and then Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav gave some valuable runs down the order.

Ashwin scored 58 off 113 balls with two fours and two sixes. Kuldeep Yadav showed his calibre with bat and ball by scoring an invaluable 40 off 114 balls with the bat consisting of four fours and then came back with the ball and picked up 5-40 in his 16-over spell.
