Shikhar Dhawan has been a stalwart for India in the white ball format. He has scored 6744 runs in 162 matches in the ODI format at an average of 45.26 and a strike rate of 91.80, including 59 half centuries and 17 hundreds.
In the world events as well, he has had an outstanding record for India. Dhawan has been a big match player for India, and has brought out the best out of himself when it came to the big matches.
He has often been under the radar and the spotlight has been stolen from him because of the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Ravi Shastri also commented on the same with regards to Dhawan’s current position in the ODI team.
He has an outstanding One Day record- Ravi Shastri
“He's vastly experienced. He doesn't get the accolades that he deserves. To be honest, most of the spotlight is on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. But when you look at his one-day cricket record, and you look at some of the innings he has played against top teams in big games, it's an outstanding record,” Shastri said during the pre-match show before the first ODI in Auckland.
Shastri also went on to say that a right-left combination at the top for India makes a lot of difference. Dhawan proved his worth in the first ODI against New Zealand on Friday by scoring 72 off 77 balls with 13 fours. He partnered at the top with Shubman Gill and stitched a wonderful opening partnership for India.
He, recently, became the captain of the Punjab franchise in the Indian T20 League and will be replacing Mayank Agarwal. This will be his second captaincy stint in the Indian T20 League after he captained the Hyderabad franchise for half a season in the 2014 edition.
