The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) was looked upon as a tournament which could change the fortunes of Bangladesh cricket and convert the Bangla Tigers into a team of World beaters when the tournament started in 2012. But it has failed to have a stellar impact on Bangladesh cricket over eleven years.
Speaking on the same, Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan slammed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for not being able to make the league world-class and make it into a huge entity. He said that an immediate turnaround would be seen if he is appointed as the BPL CEO.
"If they made me the BPL CEO, it would take me one or two months to correct everything. You have seen the movie Nayak right? If you want to do something, you can do it in one day," Shakib said in a media interaction. He referred to the Anil Kapoor starer Nayak where Anil is thrown a challenge by the Chief Minister to solve the problems of the citizens for a day.
"I would do the players' draft and auction (on time) and hold the BPL during a free time. We will have all the modern technologies. There will be quality broadcast and home and away venues."
I think we've never wanted to do anything honestly: Shakib
The BPL will run from January 6 to February 16, 2023, and will have the cream of Bangladesh cricket on show alongside the likes of cricketers from Bangladesh and Pakistan. Unmukt Chand who plays for the USA will become the first player of Indian origin to play in the BPL.
Shakib has lashed out at the management over their failure to make the tournament more engaging and fan-friendly. "I don't know about the standard of BPL. It is difficult to say whether we could not or didn't want (to make it successful). I don't see any reason not to do if we want with the possibility we have in Bangladesh. I think we've never wanted to do anything honestly," Shakib said.
One of the world's premier all-rounders in the past decade, Shakib added, "I don't see what's stopping us if we have the willingness (to correct things).
"If we are willing, I don't see any reason not to have the DRS, the draft or auction not being held three months in advance, or the teams wouldn't be confirmed two months in advance."The players are only available for one or two matches. Nobody really knows for how long they are available."
