The players' auction for the inaugural edition of the Women's T20 League took place at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai on Monday. The auction, expertly conducted by the first women auctioneer Mallika Sagar saw many star players going unsold. While some of them bagged decent price tags in the accelerated rounds, English top order batter and T20 specialist Danielle Wyatt going unsold raised quite a few eyebrows around the room.
Danielle Wyatt has been a bit out of form, which can be why the franchises chose not to bid for the top-order batter. She was frustratingly inconsistent in the Women's 20-20 World Cup 2018, managing just 47 runs at an average of 15.80. Playing with the English team for the World 20-20 World Cup 2023 happening in South Africa, the 31-year-old looked in good touch during the white-ball series against West Indies in December. She is an experienced batter who can turn around from her recent loss of form. Therefore, her failure to get picked came as a major surprise.
"Dreamt of playing in the Women's T20 League. Heartbroken. Congrats to all who got picked up. India is a wonderful place to play cricket", wrote Wyatt on Twitter.
Smriti Mandhana was the costliest player in the Women's T20 League Auction
India star batter Smriti Mandhana remained the costliest player at the players" auction, with Bangalore robbing her for their winning bid of 3.40 crores after an intense bidding war with Mumbai. Indian players remained the main winners in the auction, with 10 going for bids over 1 crore. Harmanpreet Kaur, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh, Puja Vastrakar and Devika Vaidya were headline purchases among Indian players.
Among the overseas players, Ashleigh Gardner, Natalie Sciver, Beth Mooney, Sophie Ecclestone, Ellyse Perry, Marizanne Kapp, Meg Lanning, Tahlia McGrath, Shabnim Ismail and Amelia Kerr bagged bids higher than 1 crore. The premier Women's T20 League is scheduled to be played between March 3 and 26 in Mumbai.
