The Indian women’s cricket team is through to the semi-final stage of the Asian Games 2023. Smriti Mandhana and her side got to the final four stages after their game against Malaysia was rained out. The Indian team went through to the semi-finals because they were seeded higher than their opponents.
Malaysia won the toss and chose to field first. The match was reduced to 15 overs per side due to constant rain. The match was played at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field Hangzhou in China. This is the first time that Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams are taking part in Asian Games.
Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Varma opened the innings for India. The pair added 57 runs in just 5.2 overs. The left-handed batter Mandhana is leading the Indian side in place of Harmanpreet Kaur for the initial few games.

Mandhana was the first batter to be dismissed when she was out for 27 runs. The knock came from 16 balls with the help of 5 hits to the fence. Shafali Varma, though kept going. The youngster was taking on the Malaysian bowlers and hitting them to all parts of the ground.
Varma was finally out for 67 runs which came from 39 balls. The young right-handed batter hit four boundaries and 5 huge sixes. Shafali Varma was given good support by Jemimah Rodrigues. The pair added 86 runs for the 2nd wicket and the stand came in 46 balls.
India ended with 173/2 from their 15 overs, with Rodrigues not out on 47 off 29 balls with 6 fours. Richa Ghosh scored 21 not out which came off 7 balls with 3 fours and a six. Chasing 174 to win, Malaysia was 1/0 after having faced 2 balls. The rains came down as the match finally was called off. The Indian team will play their Semi-Finals on the 24th of September in the 1st semi-finals. If India happens to win the final four game, they will play the gold medal match on the 25th of September.
