Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have made their qualification chances stronger after they defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) in a last-over thriller by 5 runs in match number 63 of IPL 2023 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. Batting first, LSG posted a total of 177 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. In reply, MI were restricted to 172 for 5 even after a good start by the openers.

LSG didn’t have a great start as they lost 3 wickets for just 35 runs in 6.1 overs. After that, skipper Krunal Pandya and Marcus Stoinis took charge of the innings as they both put up a partnership of 82 for the fourth wicket. However, Pandya was forced to leave the field due to an injury when he was just one run away from his half-century. The LSG skipper scored 49 runs off 42 balls, hitting one four and a six.

After that, Stoinis took the innings further as he remained unbeaten on 89 runs off 47 balls hitting four fours and eight sixes as LSG go past 170 runs. For MI, Jason Behrendorff scalped 2 wickets by conceding 30 runs in his four overs, while Piyush Chawla put one in his bag.

MI lost momentum after a good opening partnership

Chasing the winning total, MI got a flying start as the skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan added 90 runs for the first wicket in 9.4 overs. Rohit again lost his wicket after getting a good start as he ended up giving a catch to Deepak Hooda on the delivery off Ravi Bishnoi after scoring 37 runs off 25 balls, hitting one four and three sixes.

While Kishan went on to score his third half-century of the season as he got out after scoring 59 runs off 39 balls with eight fours and a maximum. After that, LSG bowlers made a comeback as they kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t continue his great form as he got out after scoring just 7 runs on the first ball of the 15th over. Nehal Wadhera got out after playing a slow knock of 16 runs from 20 balls.

The match went down to the last over where MI needed 11 runs to win with Cameron Green and Tim David on the crease. After that, Mohsin Khan only conceded 5 runs in the final over as MI fell short of just 5 runs from LSG’s total. David remained unbeaten on 32 runs off 19 balls but couldn’t take his team down the line. For LSG, Yash Thakur and Ravi Bishnoi took 2 wickets each, while Mohsin Khan put 1 in his bag.
