Mumbai Indians (MI) and India captain Rohit Sharma have shown faith in the talents of two youngsters, Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera, describing them as the future superstars of the franchise and Team India. Having won five Indian Premier League (IPL) trophies, MI are one of the most successful franchises in the league's history. Apart from this, there is one more element that distinguishes the Mumbai-based franchise: the way the club nurtures future stars.
Lethal fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, opening batter Ishan Kishan are all prime examples of the above statement. Talking about Wadhera and Varma, Rohit said that in the next two years these young players will become superstars like Bumrah and Hardik for both MI and India. His remark also illustrates these players' enormous potential.
“Honestly it’s going to be the same story what has happened with (Jasprit) Bumrah, Hardik (Pandya) and all these guys. That’s the same story that will happen with guys like Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera. Watch the next two years, then people will say ‘arey ye toh superstar team hai (they’re a team full of superstars)’," said Rohit while talking to JioCinema.
“These guys are being scouted and they are trained. These two guys are gonna be huge stars for us, and for India," the MI opening batter added.
Nehal Wadhera is MI's find of the season in IPL 2023
The 20-year-old Varma has impressed with his batting skills in IPL 2022 and was one of the most consistent run-scorers in a difficult campaign for his franchise. The Hyderabad cricketer scored 397 runs last season and has 274 runs from 9 matches in the ongoing IPL. Meanwhile, Wadhera has been MI's find of the season this year as he has played 12 matches for the franchise, scoring 214 runs at an average of 30.57.
Wadhera is expected to feature in the playing XI when MI lock horns against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the eliminator of IPL 2023 at the Chepauk Stadium on Wednesday (May 24).
