A drive through the covers off James Anderson’s bowling got Steve Smith to his 32nd hundred in Test cricket during the second Test of the ongoing Ashes 2023 at Lord's. He also becomes only the 12th batter to score 32 hundreds in the longest format of the game. Resuming the innings from Day 1, Smith continued churning out the runs. Despite wickets falling from the other end, the Test great got to his 32nd three-figure mark in Test cricket. The former Australian captain’s knock included 15 boundaries.

Earlier in the knock, Smith completed the milestones of 9000 and 15000 runs in test cricket and international cricket respectively. The Australian number 4 got to the milestones in 174 and 351 innings respectively. Playing the 99th test, the former Australian batter has the joint second-most hundreds for an Australian batter in Test cricket. Smith has equalled the record of Steve Waugh and is only behind Ricky Ponting on the list.

A record-breaking Test hundred!

The unorthodox batter scored his 12th test hundred against England, the joint third most for a batter against an opposition. It’s the 8th test hundred from the World Test Championship winner on England soil, the second most for a batter. It’s also the second test hundred for the World Number 6 at the home of cricket, the joint second most for a non-English batter at the venue. Smudge’s knock helped Australia to cross 400 runs in the first innings against England.

The 34-year-old was dismissed by Josh Tongue against the run of play. By the time the middle-order batter gifted his wicket away, he had already surpassed Steve Waugh to become the fourth-highest run scorer in the history of Ashes. Smith has the most runs for a batter in Ashes in the 21st century and averages 58.81 now, the fourth highest for a batter with a minimum of 2000 runs in the series. Among the active cricketers, 32 test hundreds by the world champion are the most for a batter in the format. Steve Smith became the fastest to score 32 test hundreds and took 174 innings to set the new record.
