Ravindra Jadeja remained India’s star with the ball as the left-arm spinner completed a five-wicket haul in India’s spectacular bowling performance to bundle out Australia for 177 at Nagpur. Spin ace Ravichandran Ashwin helped pick up three key wickets – the wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carry, skipper Pat Cummins and the final wicket of Scott Boland – to wrap up proceedings for the Kangaroos.
In response, India got off to a flying start, guided by skipper Rohit Sharma’s anchoring innings of 120 runs off 212 deliveries. He, alongside Ravindra Jadeja, battled hard for a 61-run partnership for the sixth wicket that rescued India after a middle-order collapse. While hitman’s century is the first ton of the series, Ravindra Jadeja’s all-around show has been central to this Indian performance.
Ravindra Jadeja contributes with both bat and ball at Nagpur
Ravindra Jadeja has always been a key player for India in Tests; ranked as the number 1 allrounder in Tests, Jadeja has an average difference of 12.90. Firstly, his total run tally of 2547 in tests yields him an average of 37.30, an impressive number for someone who bats at his position. Secondly, he has 247 scalps in the red-ball game at an average of 24.40.
The 34-year-old created major problems for the Australian middle order on Day 1 of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test, dismissing Marnus Labuschagne, Matt Renshaw and Steve Smith in quick successions. He also picked up the wickets of Peter Handscomb and the debutant Todd Murphy to make in five in the innings. However, he was not done yet. The Gujarat-born also showed up for India with the bat with an impressive fifty. He reached the milestone in the fourth ball of the 93rd over, bowled by Scott Boland, who is playing his first test in the subcontinent.
As such, fans were quick to react to Jadeja's impressive all-round performance, who is making a comeback to cricket after being sidelined for almost five months.
