The Women’s Indian T20 League technical bidding ended on January 25, Wednesday and five cities made it to the tournament, being Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Lucknow. Chennai franchise, however, backed out of the auction to bag a team in the inaugural season citing strategic season and many hoped that the Shriram group would somehow find a way to bring the city in.

However, with a lesser bid in the bank for Chennai city, the other five teams made a cut to the inaugural competition with Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai owned by their respective men’s franchises. Right after the technical bidding on Wednesday, the ESPNCricinfo reported that the Bangalore franchise refrained from bidding for teams at SA20 and International League T20 (ILT20) to use that money for the Women’s Indian T20 League.

As far as Chennai are concerned, the franchise owns a team in SA20 while Ambani and co, own franchises in ILT20 and SA20 as well. The gesture from the Bangalore franchise won hearts and fans claimed that it was the best-ever decision made by an Indian T20 League franchise ever, unlike others who went all out for other tournaments.

Can’t wait to cheer for our women in Red and Gold: Virat Kohli

Right after the bidding concluded, Virat Kohli, the Indian superstar, took to Twitter to congratulate the franchise for successfully landing a team in the inaugural season of the Women’s Indian T20 League. Kohli said that he was incredibly proud of the team and hoped to cheer for the ‘women in Red and Gold’.

“Well played, Bangalore! So thrilled that my team has won the bid for the Bengaluru Women’s Premier League team. Can’t wait to cheer for our women in Red and Gold,” Kohli wrote on his Twitter account. With the Indian U19 women’s cricket team crushing England in the finals of the Women’s U19 20-20 World Cup on Sunday, one could predict that the future of women’s cricket is secured, with the country unearthing new talents with every passing day.
