Another day, another milestone for Virat Kohli. The batting stalwart became the first player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to complete 7000 runs during Royal Challengers Bangalore's clash against Delhi Capitals at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi on Saturday, May 6. Kohli achieved the feat in his 225th IPL innings with a cut shot against DC spinner Axar Patel, which raced to the fence.
Notably, Kohli is the only player in IPL history to have played for a single franchise his whole career, implying that he scored all 7000 runs for RCB. Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shikhar Dhawan is second in the list with 6536 runs and Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner (6189) is third. The former RCB captain is well ahead of fourth-placed Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma (6063).
The 34-year-old has 49 fifties and five hundreds in the tournament, at an average of 36.59. He also holds the record for the most runs scored in a single edition of IPL (973).
Kohli, in the ongoing match against DC, got off the mark with a boundary on the second ball of first over and went on to smash another record against the 2020 finalists - becoming the first player in IPL history to complete 1000 runs against them.
RCB included veteran batter to their playing XI
Meanwhile, RCB won the toss and elected to bat first. Kohli and skipper Faf du Plessis put on 82 runs for the first wicket before the latter was out for 45 in the 11th over. Mitchell Marsh took his second wicket in the very next ball by dismissing Glenn Maxwell. However, Kohli and Mahipal Lomror is forming a decent partnership to keep them in the contest.
RCB dropped Shahbaz Ahmed and included middle order batter Kedar Jadhav in the playing XI. DC, on the other hand, named Mukesh Kumar as a replacement for South African pace bowler Anrich Nortje, who is unavailable due to personal reasons.
